My Christmas Dinner part 3

The duck is beautifully roasting and i prepared the carrots and brocollis to add some reds and greens to the table. Couple of minutes after we were enjoying our meal with chardonnay in the veranda.

My (not so ) Thai Christmas Dinner part 2

So, after the boys huddled on what to do for dinner..actually googling recipe on the duct (thanks jaime oliver!).. the menu was finally settled : for appetizer, we would have sour cream, salmon and caviar. main course would be: roasted duck with potatoes and carrots.

so, while james went to the deli to get the rest of the stuff that we were not able to find in tesco..we prepared the chicken and onion stock simmering it in low heat.



the stock is what we will use for the gravy later..

while all these are cooking up ( literally)..james prepared our starters

those were sliced baguette with sour cream and smoke salmon..the salmon were really good..it melts in your mouth


we just add caviar on top and these are really smokin' good stuff..


and these were the ones that i made..aren't they pretty!!!

apart from the stock we also prepared the potatoes and carrots and the stuffing

crumbs that we will add oranges, onions and also we prepared an onion, lemongrass, garlic rub.



so few minutes before the duck goes to the oven, we already poped the champagne! james is manning the kitchen and i'm blogging hehe! Merry Christmas everybody!

My Thai Christmas Dinner part 1

Surely Pinoy Xmas is the merriest there is..so spending Christmas in a Buddhist country is not an altogether bad idea but its kinda surreal and different.

One, there are no kids pestering you for coins after they return over an over again to your house singing the same Christmas carol.

Or, i dont smell any powder smoke from firecrackers, in fact it was relatively quiet (except for an occasional firework display) last night.

But, i'm spending it with Scott and his friend James (both don't believe in Jesus by the way, but insisted on putting up traditions) so a Christmas dinner will take place tonight..no lechon or leche flan or lengua or anything like that. James is cooking so.. it is sort of like the best English Christmas dinner we can come up with.

First of, we have to do some shopping..in Bang Tao, Tesco supposedly has it all. But they actually don't.

that's james looking for cream..it gets a bit confusing really with the thai characters and no english translation.
needless to say, we didn't find any cream for the the broccolis. and the pork did not look good either so we settled for roast stuffed duck, potatoes, carrots other veggies..should be good!

o1. What are your nicknames?

apple is my second name and i thought tweaking it a bit would make me sound mature..so i changed it to 'apol'..hmm, one of my early pitfalls i admit..it made me sound like a retard who cannot spell..

people (read: pinoy in general) would call me 'pol' but in writing would spell it as 'ple'..my mum, on the other hand, would call me /ple/

distinctively, i was called nunal..still is to those few who knew me from before. i wrote a blog about the much ado national television coverage of my mole operation therefore i am now called n0-nal for obvious reasons.

jopol, apolei are also identified to my character...hey! they also call me bakla and bogart pla!

o2. How do you style your hair?


attempt to towel dry, combing is totally dependent on my mood or my memory (if i remember to do it) or the visibility of a comb..then tie it with a band.. its a no fuss glamour actually..maybe i'm just born with it.. hehehe

3-green, red and white.. thank god i don't look xmassy

not recently, but i love napping

i think i am at the point in my life when letting go of a thing or person or an opportunity that is not meant for me is a whole lot easy to accept. i have bigger fights to win..

unhappiness is a necessary evil to appreciate happiness and joy

pancit canton, the real deal not the instant one and yummy too!

Gmail, LJ, Facebook, google reader, yahoo mail, blogspot.. google reader saves me a lot of time in getting my daily dose of food and design blogs..perezhilton, businesspundits etc..

learning to be a princess.. :P

clean yes, getting things back in order no..i like a healthy dose of kalat..

kusina salud part 3. the food

in case you want to skip the other aspects of my Kusina Salud story, i wrote this part last so that it will serve`that very purpose.

casual dining may seemed to be the order in Kusina Salud and but there was nothing casual in the preparation and choice of produce used in the Filipino dishes offered to us.




this lumpiang ubod (P130) is so crispy with the perfect slices of ubod and sinamak vinegar to compliment it


we were served with whole grain brown rice (P35)..i have been skipping rice but i cannot resist this one.


the pinakbet (around p150), i suspect is from the old menu way back when the restaurant was still in Baguio but it is yum too!


this seafood tinola (p275) was really good and perfect for the heavy rain while we were there..i cannot remember having malunggay for a very long time!! this one really tasted like home


the one on the left is enchiladang pako (fern) was also a yummy surprise..it has tomatoes, red onions and grated cheese which reminds you of a mexican taco.






a close up of the beef dish above.. it tasted like pochero including the bananas on it but sans the tomato sauce. nevertheless, it tasted really good!



they are also introducing new dishes to their menu..this is the duck dish in tanglad (lemongrass) sauce


this is fried hito salad with mango.. reminds you of a thai catfish salad without the over-powering spices..



they call this chicken dish chinoy (single serving p55) because..its actually a take of the traditional fried chicken with garlicky sauce




this one is called patatim (p305) because its crispy pata with tim sauce



the banana turon ala mode..one of my favorite dessert i wrote a blog about this before

chef paul poblete attending to us..he is the one responsible for all the yummy food..(i'm salivating now by just thinking bout the food again)

kusina salud part 1. the place

tetet, my producer friend from my former show kay susan tayo called me up last friday and asked if i wanted to join the first installment of the viaje del sol segments that the show will feature..so being kaladkarin, i said, "go lang ng go".

we left Manila at exactly 7am and headed south. our first stop was Kusina Salud. the restaurant (click here for exact location map) is a charming environment created with the eclectic taste by filipiniana fashion designer Patis Tesoro.





Photos of the compound's cafe where they serve breakfast and snacks and it also holds an antique shop and day spa.












the place is originally a vacation home for the famous designer. it is filled with old world treasures. resembling an old provincial Filipino home, it looks like a deconstructed Pinoy house with quintesennial features like the stairs or hagdanan and the capiz shell windows.





buddhas are also recurring fixtures that add a distinct asian touch to the whole place.

makes a very interesting day trip if you are looking for a new place to discover near Manila and we are not talking about the food yet..

my new favorite things

we just finished doing the catalogue pictorial for HomeMavericks last week..


this is a gorgeous steel and blackstone dining table with bronze detail on top..its modern and it seats 4 comfortably..and look at the leather napkin holder and the wine pourer on the bottle of wine!!!
This is a nice wine rack that's perfect for my tatay's new bar..



and scott's dad who golfs in gleneagles every weekend would surely love this!and really nice outdoor furniture for someone's veranda!! yey!
